Tucked away in a bustling corner of the city lies a hidden gem that every food enthusiast must try: SALON Restaurant in Cape Town, South Africa. Known for its refined elegance and charming ambiance, SALON offers a new multi-course dining journey by legendary visionary Luke Dale Roberts.

Upon entering SALON, I was greeted by a pleasantly warm and welcoming hostess. The decor was elegant, yet understated and, the attentive waitstaff went above and beyond to ensure I had a memorable dining experience, recommending dishes and beverage pairings with expert knowledge and precision.

I ordered the Prix Fixe Explorer menu and was promptly taken on a culinary adventure that left my taste buds buzzing with excitement. The majority of the dishes were nothing short of spectacular, showcasing the chef's creativity and skill in combining flavors and textures. From the appetizers to the dessert, each bite was a delightful surprise that kept me coming back for more.

However, two dishes fell short of expectations - the Cheese &Pickle sandwich and the Duck Suzette. Both dishes lacked the bold flavors that I had come to expect from the other dishes. It was a minor disappointment in an otherwise exquisite dining experience.

When comparing the fullness of flavors between SALON and Pot Luck Club, Pot Luck Club takes the lead. The dishes at Pot Luck Club are bursting with flavor and showcase a level of sophistication that is hard to beat. While SALON’s dishes were delicious, Pot Luck Club's offerings were simply on another level.

Despite this minor setback, the service at SALON was impeccable and the ambiance was sophisticated and inviting. The staff, as I said, were attentive and knowledgeable, adding to the overall enjoyment of the meal. Overall, my dinner experience at SALON was wonderful and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a refined dining experience.

Salon was a disappointment… The Test kitchen restaurant experience was amazing I expected the food to be as delicious, but experienced Bland meals and overdone steak :(

The food was devine. Great atmosphere. You'll struggle for parking on Saturday lunchtime due to the Market below, so park offstreet

"Good but very small food and wine portions "
7.3 Cuisine 6 | Service 8 | Atmosphere 8

Food was good although be aware that the portions are extremely small. Would be fine for the full journey menu but if you’re doing restaurant week or 5 course you’ll leave hungry. Wine pairing is also minimal so I would order wine by glass or full bottle.

About SALON

Cuisine: Fine Dining

SALON: A new multi-course dining journey by Luke Dale Roberts, the culinary visionary behind the renowned restaurant, The Test Kitchen.

About Salon
SALON menu marks something of a return to the heady days of Luke’s iconic restaurant, The Test Kitchen.

“The ‘Dark Room’ experience was, for me, the high point of The Test Kitchen at the time,” he says. “So I decided to emulate that here at SALON.”

Diners arrive at SALON through a bright golden portal, a striking entrance into a more traditional salon space of Victorian-style floors and classical marble-topped bistro tables.

The concept of the Journey menu showcases each country that Luke has worked in, focusing on a signature dish from that country’s culinary heritage, with the menu being small focused and interactive. Diners are encouraged to come along on a voyage that shows Luke’s evolution and influences as a chef. “It takes my decades of travelling, tasting and cooking in some incredible kitchens around the world, and condenses it all into a nine-course exploration of all the wonderful flavours and dishes I’ve encountered along the way.” Says Luke.
